I tried to keep the addiction hidden in the closet but it’s out.
I can’t stop watching birth videos + I can’t stop listening to podcasts.
At first it was a casual pastime. I’d hang out with my doula friends (shout-out to Wildflower Doula Service + Frances Claire! Best doulas on the West Coast if you’ve got a BFF out there) and we’d talk about the births we’d seen on YouTube or birth stories we read about in articles online. We’d swap links and discuss the why, how, what, where, when of whatever we’d seen or read.
And then I got introduced to BirthTube. Yes, BirthTube. It’s the childbirth version of YouTube and it’s everything you could imagine and more. But better. And even more magical.
With 28.000+ members and birth videos galore, it’s doula-midwife-maternalhealthcare-mama-pregnantmama-daddy-grandmama-anybody-everybody heaven (if you’re into this stuff, of course).
AND THE BEST PART (as if you needed another reason to love them as much as I do), people livestream their births.
YES. LIVESTREAM. As in, you get to watch people birth their babies live. They’re in hospitals, at home, with doulas, under OB care, inductions, drug-free with midwife… It’s all there. Babies that come before midwives can get there and gentle, quiet, long hospital births. Live.
And for the time in between births or when I’m unable to watch a birth (like in the car or late at night when I’m trying to avoid blue light) I have Australian Birth Stories.
They’re on episode 48 and new parents bravely share their birth stories through the ABS podcast channel. The accounts are honest, raw, empowering and beautiful. You hear stories from all sorts of people, from all sorts of backgrounds, with all different perspectives and beliefs. The unfolding of each birth story happens at its own rhythm and brings with it its own set of wisdom and healing.
I love childbirth education classes, I love books, and I love evidence-based information. But this… This is something really special. It’s people and women sharing their birth stories in order to educate, empower and excite others on their path. It’s the processing of their journey in a way that is positive, impactful and incredibly vulnerable to others on their own journeys.
If you’re pregnant or if you love someone who is pregnant, take full advantage of these free resources. Adventure into this wild world at your own speed, in the comfort of your own home and know that on your journey, you are not alone. Watch and listen as these people expose themselves in the most fragile and exposed moments of their lives with sheer strength, courage, grit, beauty, grace, ferocity, focus, determination, bliss…
