I read two different posts this week that stopped me in my tracks and forced me to do some serious self-reflection and it’s with deep humility that I offer the same opportunity to you.
I don’t have all the answers and you won’t ever catch me claiming to. This post offers questions rather than answers and I encourage you to explore them on your own & with your tribe.
The article I read can be found here by Brianna West published on ThoughtCatalog and the second is this Instagram post by Lindsey Bliss. Both touch on the topic of self-care + wellness.
Please please please click through and read both. But don’t do it for me; this is all about you.
As a doula, I’ve had to have these conversations with clients.
Yes, treating yourself to chocolate cake is great but it’s not necessarily self-care; pre-cut some fruits and vegetables to make sure your body is fueled and well-fed.
Yes, treating yourself to a Netflix binge is great but it’s not necessarily self-care; move your body, get exercise, breathe some fresh to make sure you are active and strong.
Yes, buying those heels is great but it’s not necessarily self-care; sometimes spending that money on someone to come in and help postpartum is worth more than a fancy photo.
Please don’t feel that I am telling you what to eat, what to do, what to spend your money on.
What I am doing is asking you to reconsider what
health + wellness + self-care looks like for you.
“The act of self-care has become yet another thing women are expected to be good at. Did you use the right filter for that ‘gram of your impeccably prepared acai bowl? Are the candles you just lit in your Snap story made from organic hand-poured soy or are they that mass-produced factory shit? And how can we stem the inevitable capitalist tide from turning something as simple as self-care into yet another thing to be bought and sold? These are all things I wrestle with as I order Dominos in sweatpants under the guise of ‘being good to myself.’ – quote via Amil Niazi”
Self-care should not be self-sabotage.
How do YOU show yourself some authentic + true self-care?
